| Description: Charcoal associated
with seven painted slabs excavated from 1969-1972 from the Apollo
11 Cave yielded the oldest rock art date in Africa of c. 25,500
to 27,500
BP (Wendt
1976). The oldest engravings (geometric designs, animals) are
from the Wonderwerk
Cave, Northern Cape, SA, where associated charcoal gives 10,200
years BP (Thackeray
et al., 1981). |
