Description: Charcoal associated with seven painted slabs excavated from 1969-1972 from the Apollo 11 Cave yielded the oldest rock art date in Africa of c. 25,500 to 27,500 BP (Wendt 1976). The oldest engravings (geometric designs, animals) are from the Wonderwerk Cave, Northern Cape, SA, where associated charcoal gives 10,200 years BP (Thackeray et al., 1981).
