Family of Rhinos
Tsodilo Hills, Botswana
Discussion: Over 4,500 paintings occur at the new World Heritage Site at Tsodilo in just 10 sq. km. of the Kalahari Desert. The most interesting paintings are a whale, a penguin, child-sized handprints, and sexually aroused trance dancers. Bantu painted more recently geometric designs, mostly cross-hatched basket-shaped patterns, and domesticated animals. The rock art was painted over a long period of time dating from 800-1,300 years BP to the 19th century. Rhinos were rain-animals associated with storms and lightning. Hippos and female animals were identified with light soaking rain.
